Secretariat
I don't watch a lot of movies these days and I don't write as much as I used to. But once in a while, something happens to change all that.
I'm changing. Getting old and changing.
Secretariat is the name of a horse. A colt horse, but his real name is Big Red. I learned more from the horse than his owner but I'll start with the owner.
Shamelessly, forthrightly, boldly go after your dreams. Do it and never back down. Never give up. Let the thought of giving up never even come up. Don't consider it for a moment. Don't second-guess whether you made the right decision when things seem impossible. No, forge ahead fearlessly. Everything will part ways for you to come through when you have an undying, unyielding attitude. Never back down and you will succeed.
All that, I learned from the woman. They called her a housewife but she shook off the insults and showed them what a housewife can do. There will always be people like that, they are scared of you so they reach out and try to intimidate you every way they know how. Pay little attention to them, mere distractions they are. Keep your eyes on the goal and if they're smart they will soon join you. Now to the horse.
Big Red. Big Red was born for one thing. He was born to run. Almost all horses run but Big Red was born to run. It's his purpose and he knew it. He always came from behind to win each race. He always won no matter the increasing challenge. People doubted him. They said he's untested. He has never done this before. No one has ever done this before. He's too young. Excuses. These are what people were saying about him but no one asked him what he thought. Big Red was born to run, that's his purpose and boy did he run.
He always came from behind except for the biggest race of his life. For this race, he had to run faster and longer than he has ever run before. There was only one real opponent, Sham. Sham was not as fast as Red but Sham was made for the distance. Everybody knew that's where he shines. For Big Red to win he had to prove that he was both fast and had the endurance to win long races.
For this race, Big Red didn't start from behind, he took the lead right off the gate and kept it till the end of the race. They were saying, no horse can run this fast for this long. But Red was not just any horse. Red was born to run, that's his purpose. Red ran that race, beat Sham by a long shot and set a record no one else can beat. Big Red won. He did the thing he was made to do and excelled in it. No one could match him or come close. He was in a league of his own.
As I watched him run that final leg, the closest opponent a good distance away and Red still gaining speed, it broke me. I was in tears, sobbing like a child. I wondered if we are not like Big Red. I wondered if we were not born to run like him. Almost all horse run but Big Red was born to run. I wondered, what am I born to do? Am I doing it? Am I doing it with the same determination Red had? Or have I listened to people who make excuses for me, or the ones I make for myself?
I wondered if that's the true nature of the child of God. If they were meant to live in such a way that blows the world away and shows forth the wonder and glory of our Almighty God. I don't believe we should be just a little better than the world, I believe we should surpass the world with the strength, intelligence, wisdom, light and so much more, that can only come from Heaven. That when men see it, they shake their heads and say that's not possible. This is what I believe. And I want to see it in my life. I want to see it.
Run your race, live your dream!

How Great is the Love
Thank You for the way that You love us
How You love us
Thank You for the way You have made us
We were created
For Your pleasure, for Your presence
For the glory of Your name
Thank You for the way that You love us
Jesus, faithful King
Lord, with grateful hearts we sing
How great is the love
How great is the love
Of our Savior
The weight of the cross, the curse of our shame
You carried it all and rose from the grave
How great is the love, how great is the love
Of our Savior
Thank You for Your grace that has saved us
You forgave us
Thank You for the way You have freed us
We have been ransomed
We've been rescued, we've been purchased
With the price of Your own life
Thank You for the way that You love us
Jesus, faithful King
Lord, with grateful hearts we sing
How great is the love
How great is the love
Of our Savior
The weight of the cross, the curse of our shame
You carried it all and rose from the grave
How great is the love, how great is the love
Of our Savior
Thank You for the way that You love us
How You love us
Jesus, faithful King
Lord, with grateful hearts we sing
How great is the love
How great is the love
Of our Savior
The weight of the cross, the curse of our shame
You carried it all and rose from the grave
How great is the love, how great is the love
Of our Savior
I've sort of rediscovered this song. I was going through Facebook and found a Youtube video I posted years ago of a cover done by Vertical Church Band. The version does not matter, just the lyrics. Great indeed is the love of our saviour. Who else can love like He does? Undeserved, unending, faithful, abiding love. I am grateful.

This is not going to make sense.
pieces, fragments, broken, whole
rhythm, tandem, pull, snap
severed, tethered, here and there
fired, weathered, wired, molded
There's a big house. You can see from the window that looks out to the road. It's a big house with a big door in a big plot. There are two cars, one is white. "I want a house like that".
There's a painting, a work of art. There's blue and yellow on a white canvas. It's a work of art. It's a nice painting.
White and black. Chocolate from cocoa pods. Peas in a pod. Peaches.
It was just a dream. He opens his eyes to the familiar scene of his room. There's a stench, a familiar stench. There's light filtering through the only window, illuminating the obstacle course of things not in their place. At least the sheets are clean. It was just a dream but the pain is back. The doctors did a good job so it's hard to tell, but every now and then like an echo the pain comes back and then it's gone, like a dream. Only, it was not a dream, he was there. He went back to when it happened. He went there again and felt his skin being ripped up, he was lucky to be alive but don't talk to him about luck. "There's no such thing as luck" he would say. Ruby still checks in on him, to make sure he's OK. It's not enough for her to save a life. She's one of the rare ones, the last of her kind. "She's a gem" he'd say, but only to himself.

Thoughts on interracial marriage
I've been reading Bloodlines, currently on chapter 2. I can't recommend it enough even if you're just curious. Where do I stand with interracial marriage? I was in a taxi once and overheard some people from a particular tribe in Nigeria talk about how the bible warns against interracial marriage. They pride were proud that they married from their own tribes and promoted it as 'the way'. (Taxis are shared in Nigeria)
First, the bible does not condemn interracial marriage. Boaz a Jew marriage Ruth, a Moabite. It was the most natural thing. He was not condemned. Jesus eventually came from that union. It is important to always know the reason for every commandment. When God warned Solomon not to marry from other nations, it was so they won't draw his heart away from God to serve their idols, breaking the commandment 'thou shalt have no other gods besides me'. Solomon disobeyed, married many wives from pagan nations, they turned his heart away from God and God stripped him of his kingdom.
As a Christian, I wholeheartedly support and endorse interracial marriages between a man and a woman, as long as both parties are Christian. That is the only qualification I have. Both must be Christian adults who seek and love the Lord Jesus Christ. However it is not for the faint of heart.
I was asked to accompany a friend once. She was in Kuching for internship and wanted to explore the city, didn't know anyone to ask, we were both uni mates, I was quite free so I agreed. I'm Nigerian and she's Chinese Malaysian. Good friends. As we walked through the Kuching waterfront side by side, not holding hands or anything, but just the two of us, I noticed the stares. That society does not approve of this kind of relationship. That was what the stares were about. I've had an experience where I was verbally abused in BM. I don't understand BM very well but it was obvious that this man was physically disgusted.
As a Nigerian in Malaysia who is usually in the midst of locals, I guess I'm used to the stares but it was unnerving. We live in a fallen world. People don't like things they don't understand. People are evil by nature. Discrimination can take many forms and I don't think we will never advance to completely eliminate all forms of discrimination. It is something to consider and make allowances for if you plan on having an interracial relationship/marriage. You will be discriminated against, so will your children. That's just the way it is. Is it right? Is it fair? No, it is not right. It is not fair but that's the world we live in. Be prepared to stomach these things and face them.
I've often said that multiracial couples are some of the strongest people I know and nothing bridges communities and promote mutual understanding as being married outside your tribe and people. It is powerful, and it is good.

Resist the devil and keep resisting
Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7
I have discovered that to resist the devil is an ongoing activity. You resist the devil and keep resisting and be determined to keep resisting him till you die. You know why? He never gives up. He never lets you alone. Maybe just for a while but He is so confident that he can get you at some point.
